Gemini Arabians have won the first edition of the Masters Champions League (MCL) after beating the Leo Lions side by 16 runs in a closely contested final as Gemini's Rana Naved-ul-Hasan took a hat-trick and picked up 4 wickets by giving just 9 runs in 4 overs.
The Arabians had a very strong squad and were undefeated in whole tournament. They had won all five matches of the group stage and then won the semifinal to keep their 100% record intact. But for the first time in the tournament they were given real scare in the final game.
Luck was on Leo captain Brian Lara's side who won the toss and elected to field first. Gemini captain Virendar Sehwag has been in great form in whole tournament but he was dismissed by Robin Peterson after scoring just 9 runs as Gemini realised it won't be an easy affair for them.
Kumara Sangakkara and Richard Levi scored 30 and 21 respectively whereas Justin Kemp top scored with 32. None of their last 4 entered double figures as Gemini were restricted to 130/7 in 20 overs, but Leo did not get off to a good start either as opener Neil Carter was dismissed for a duck.
Brendon Taylor scored just 1 run and James Franklin also got out for 0 as they were in deep trouble at 3/3. But then Hamish Marshall and captain Brian Lara had 86 runs partnership to bring their side in a very strong position. They needed only 42 off 37 balls and it looked like they could win.
But then Hamish Marshall was dismissed after scoring 46 runs and few overs later Rana Naved bowled an amazing over in which he dismissed Brian Lara, Johan Botha and Heath Streak to complete his hat-trick. Leo Lions were bowled out for 114 in 19.3 overs and lost by 16 runs.
