Left-handed New Zealand batsman Henry Nicholls has been included in the test team for the first time as Ross Taylor has not got fit yet and Nicholls has replaced him whereas wicket-keeper Luke Ronchi could also be back in the team as he is on stand-by.
This is big series for Brendon McCullum, who has been named in the New Zealand squad for the last time as it will be his last series as he is the captain. Kane Williamson will be his deputy in the series and could become the captain of the side after the retirement of McCullum.
Former captain Ross Taylor had suffered an injury against Pakistan in the test series which rules him out. He has been advised to get some rest because he will be an important member of the T20 Championship squad after the retirement of McCullum.
The fast bowler Tim Southee is also back in the team as he got injured in the series against Sri Lanka. He had caused a lot of damage to the Australian line-up along with Trent Boult and they will be assisted by Matt Henry and Neil Wagner in the test series.
The coach of the New Zealand Mike Hesson has said that they have picked up a very balanced team and Southee, Henry and Boult will be assisted by Mitchell Santner as the spinner who can also bat. He said that Nicholls has been included because of his great form and will be very useful.
