Sagittarius Strikers have got off to a winning start in the Masters Champions League (MCL) as they defeated the Virgo Super Kings by 26 runs, as the Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene scored 69 off just 47 balls and played important role in his side's win.
At the Dubai International Stadium Strikers led by Australia's Adam Gilchrist and Super Kings led by Graeme Smith faced each other. Strikers won the toss and chose to bat first as Gilchrist and Jayawardene opened the batting and added 25 for first wicket.
Their first wicket fell when Gilchrist went back after scoring 13 runs, and was dismissed by Azhar Mahmood. For second wicket England's Michael Carberry and Jayawardene had 71 runs partnership. They were 96/1 in 11.2 overs and looked to be going towards a big total.
But then Brett Lee did not let them score much and Strikers finished their innings at 157/6 in 20 overs. In reply Strikers also had a pacer Shane Bond who could bowl very fast like Lee and took some early wickets to make sure that Super Kings do not get off to a good start.
Among top 6 Virgo batsmen, only 1 scored in double figures as Bond picked up 3 wickets. Very soon Super Kings were 43/6 and it looked like they would not even reach 100 but then Azhar Mahmood scored 51 off 31 to take his side closer, but he got in the second last over and Virgo could score only 131/9 in 20 overs.
