An all-round bowling and batting effort made it an easy first victory for Pukke in this year’s competition. Pukke fielded first and took the early advantage with a crucial wicket early on when JP Le Roux got rid of Ricardo Vasconcelos for a duck.
Le Roux was bowling beautifully for Pukke, only conceding 12 runs in his four overs. A fantastic catch from Janneman Malan got rid of Jean Bredenkamp for eight as captain Wihan Lubbe brought himself into the attack. Two runouts followed in quick succession as poor running had Maties four wickets down within four overs at 31/4.
Pukke continued to apply the pressure and had Maties at 43/4 after 10 over, scoring at a very slow rate. Pukke were brilliant with the ball as Katleho Leokoake and Dylan Matthews bamboozled Maties with their spin bowling. Maties were soon reduced to 92/8 after 17 overs. Maties ended with their score on 112/9.
Pukke needed to get off to a good start and that openers Janneman Malan and Wihan Lubbe did and did to great effect, putting up 45 for the first wicket. Lubbe’s reverse sweep off Maties spinner Kyle Simmonds, for six, was one of the shots of the day and showed his aggressive intent. Maties introduced spin into the attack and this paid dividends as Niel Botha claimed the wickets of Lubbe and Frenz to reduce Pukke to 68/2 after 10.
However, brothers, Andre (28) and Janneman Malan (27) steered Pukke to a comfortable victory with 28 balls to spare. Lubbe says: 'We played better this evening and stuck to our basics. It was a fantastic effort from the team.' Pukke net face UWC in the first televised match of tournament at Senwes Park, which starts at 18:00.
